I try to make pretty things and to make humans happier.

I lived on a boat (31 ft Island Packet named Dragonfly) for a while, and it was perfect and horrible and exciting and boring and mind-blowing and cold. This was a particularly good day.
Pancakes for my best friend’s birthday. She makes such incredible pancakes that she earned the trail name Pancakes when she hiked the 2650 mile long Pacific Crest Trail. She’s an absolute badass mountaineer, baker, crocheter, artist, and human, and she has a fantastic hiking blog that everyone should read.
Bonus: the most perfect cat in the world scoping out my paint water (don’t worry, she didn’t drink any).
Hope you’re having a lovely day and creating and enjoying. Cheers, R.
Ruins of a church found while walking El Camino in Viana, Spain. It’s a spooky feeling, being inside of a massive cathedral that’s missing a roof, most walls, and stained glass.
Ok, one more pelican post because they just look like small dinosaurs and lovely and terrifying. Another from the living on a boat year in Destin. He was standing like this on the pier right off our boat and made me nervous enough that I just stayed put on the boat til he left. Because he’s almost my size and I’m not trying to fight a mini-dinosaur.
Another tiny round bird (to follow the golden-crown kinglet and junco)! Bushtits are very noisy and chattery small friends. They have a lot to talk about I guess. Like cracking jokes about their fantastic name. To protect their dignity, I guess I’ll mention that the “tit” part comes from the Old Icelandic “titr” meaning something small. They also weave fancy hanging nests.
10/10 top notch bird.
Shout out to my mom, who loves the bushtit and taught me to identify it (even if I can’t quite draw it right). Except I keep pretending that I don’t recognize what type of bird it is just to get a chuckle from my lovely, excitable mom saying “bushtit” over and over. Hi mom, I love you.

This is what my space looked like when I was half finished with the first piece I was working on. Had to keep migrating around the room, because there were so many scraps of paper everywhere. Or maybe I have a Pretty Bits of Paper hoarding problem.
Hope you liked this series and are having a great week.

Junco in charcoal and colored pencil – 18in x 24in
Juncos are all over here up in Seattle and have plenty of personality. Top notch bird.
Juncos are flocking birds with a distinct social hierarchy. They forage on the ground in these groups, scratching with their feet to find food. The flash of white tail feathers serve as a signal that alerts members of the flock when one is alarmed.
Golden-crowned Kinglet – charcoal and colored pencil – 18 in x 24 in
This fellow is the Golden-crowned Kinglet, and he is quite small and tough. I have yet to see one in person, but I hope to some day since they live around here near Seattle.
One of our tiniest birds, the Golden-crowned Kinglet is remarkable in its ability to survive in cold climates. Nesting in northern forest, wintering throughout much of the continent, it is usually in dense conifers which undoubtedly help provide shelter from the cold.
The Devil’s Hole Pupfish is a uniquely spectacular specimen. Considered the rarest fish on Earth, the entire species lives in a 2m x 4m pool in the middle of the desert near Death Valley National Park in California. It’s a one-inch endangered fish that lives in the middle of the desert. In a pool called The Devil’s Hole. In Death Valley. What a bold little species. You’re truly noble beasts, small friends. We wish you the best.
Nothing too wild and exciting today, just some practice in vine charcoal and some of my bird friends.
Want to do a big, pretty piece of one of these guys soon, because I think they’re just fantastic tiny, round beasts, but something about their shape is just so hard for me draw. Anyone have suggestions on resources for learning to them?
Shoutout to a couple of my bird friends that pop by my window for peanuts.
This is Balthazar – he and his mate know the whistle I use to call them in, and respond with a unique call of their own. They recently had three babies, and they all come hang out with me when I’m in the yard. And sometimes follow me down the street to the cafe. 10/10, top notch birds. And congrats on your new family, crow friends. This guy and his buddy have recently started trying to take over my house from the crows as their own territory. Stellar’s Jays’ blue feathers are remarkable in the sun. And their punk rock mohawks are pretty spectacular. 10/10, top notch birds.
Tell me about your favorite birds? Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend and enjoying creating/capturing beautiful things.
I think big, alien emptinesses are nice, so I really enjoyed spending a couple of days in Death Valley recently. Sleeping in my car. With another human. When the temperature was 109 F. Ok maybe the park itself was more of a highlight than the sleeping arrangement. The salt flats at sunset are surreal, and the ground makes creaky noises at some times due to the salt crystals expanding or contracting.
I think it’s uniquely beautiful when nature becomes monochrome. It feels still and quiet, bleak but also cozy at the same time. Found this tree while hiking. It’s a full color photo with no edits.
When I lived in Minnesota and winter settled in, the only color to really be found was a incredibly blue sky now and then. The ground was white. The trees were black. The plowed roads were a grey mush. Walking along the sidewalk, the piles of snow that surrounded you on both sides had a striations of white and grey.
Another full color photo from the Cascade mountains
Here in Seattle, it’s similar minus the snow. The streets are black, the sky is eternally grey for several months of the year. The clouds hang so low that they feel like being buried under a warm blanket. The morning fog sometimes obscures sight completely, making everything white.
Ok, one non-artsy-fartsy photo just for fun, because this is making me fondly remember walking ten block to class on sidewalks like this.
